Banning Bouldin and New Dialect in partnership with Belmont University are proud to present certified Countertechnique instructor Joy Davis in a three-day workshop of Anouk Van Dijk’s acclaimed Countertechnique, May 17-19, at Belmont’s Black Box Theater.
Joy Davis has studied Countertechnique with Anouk Van Dijk since 2005 and is now one of four Americans and 15 teachers worldwide to become certified to teach this renowned approach to contemporary dance. She has choreographed and performed across the US and Holland. In September, she will attend Smith College as an MFA dance candidate.
About the Workshop:
Countertechnique® is a contemporary dance technique that stretches, coordinates and strengthens the body, making the dancer sweat, build stamina and move! The class starts with a recurring set of exercises, allowing dancers to investigate the Countertechnique® principles in detail. The second half of the class consists of changing components, working towards luscious movement combinations and jumping. The Countertechnique® class results in dancers using less energy, losing their fear of taking risks and gaining speed in changing direction.
The workshop weekend will consist of 3 Countertechnique classes as well as 2 improvisation classes in which Joy will draw information from Countertechnique and other methods to encourage dancers in the exploration of movement possibilities. This workshop is presented in conjunction with Banning Bouldin/New Dialect’s Contemporary Cross-Training series, a 5-week contemporary dance training session offering advanced/professional dancers the opportunity to study a diverse range of contemporary dance vocabularies, concepts, and techniques on a daily basis. Designed to be a research lab for both dancers and teaching artists, New Dialect aims to create an environment where gifted teachers are encouraged to explore and refine their syllabi, and each participant is actively engaged in the process of identifying with clarity and confidence his or her own movement signature. It is New Dialect’s goal to host and present high-level local, national, and international teaching artists on an ongoing basis. By further informing the dance community of the wide variety of high-quality movement vocabularies existing in the world of 21st century dance, we aspire to contribute to the bright future of contemporary dance in Nashville: training teachers, dancers, and choreographers to give, interpret, and make work that is authentic, well-researched, and inspiring.
