This class is envisioned as an evolving exploration of functional ballet technique as it relates to diverse, individual bodies. While that may seem like a rather amorphous description of a class, I firmly believe that classical ballet can function as a springboard for more adventurous or more introspective movement choices when it is approached with an intellectual and practical understanding of the consequences of the choices we make about the movements we embody.
To that end, I propose that each class session can be used to research the ways in which each body navigates its relationship with ballet, while still remaining true to itself. Each class will begin with exercises based on Pilates and physical therapy best practices, designed to fine-tune the body’s alignment, integrity, and available mobility before progressing to a simple ballet barre, implementing these concepts.
